A long vacant property at the forefront of North Mankato's downtown finally has a plan. The Marigold lot on Belgrade Avenue, near 169 will see construction begin in May.News 12's Ryan Gustafson has the story. The North Mankato Port Authority has been looking for something to fill the void of the old Marigold Dairy property on Belgrade Avenue next to 169 for nearly 20 years. After two plans for a hotel to be built in its place fell through, a combination of commercial and residential building looks to be the answer.Wendell Sande says, "The developer is Van Moody. He's the owner of computer Technology Solutions and in the first phase Computer Technology Solutions will occupy the main floor."That first phase is expected to begin in May, with construction finishing in the fall...followed by two other buildings to be built over the next six years. The second phase will contain two levels of retail and commercial space, housing ten apartments above. And the third phase will be a building containing eleven condominiums.City leaders are happy to have development in a key area of town.Sande says, "We felt for a long time that that's the gate entrance to the community on Belgade Avenue and it's very desirable of a building on that site. Something that will be a credit to that site and to the community."Total cost on the project looks to be around eleven million dollars. And will serve as a huge facelift for a portion of the city leaders want to revitalize.Sande says, "Downtown redevelopment is one of the prime objectives of Envision 2020 process and the intercity process so we are strongly into the implementation phase."After two decades, it will be nice to be ahead of schedule. In North Mankato, Ryan Gustafson, News 12.
