St. Peter Prepares For Potential Floods

Good evening, I'm Dion Cheney. And I'm Nicole Winters, thanks for The city of Saint Peter is preparing for what could be its biggest flood since 2001.And, as News 12's Erick Lind reports...While they're preparing for the rising waters, it may be the remains from another storm that could cause bigger problems.Saint Peter Police Chief Matt Peters is always trying to keep the city safe from crime. He feels the same way about keeping the city safe from weather.Chief Peters has already met with hydrologists to look over the notes they took from the flood of 2001.The city sent out letters last week to residential areas that may be impacted by floods.Chief Peters says, "The first thing you can do is make sure you have flood insurance in case it goes well beyond what we saw in 2001. We'll help work with those people to acquire what they need."What Chief Peters is asking for in return, is for residents to keep an eye on the river in case problems start to show up that could compound flooding problems.Peters adds, "Really pay attention to when they see the ice moving. If they see ice dams, if they see debris, give us that information. Tell us where it's at, how long it's been there, so we can have people who know how to deal with these kind of things."If the river gets high enough to come across Highway 169 as it did in 2001, many of the downed trees from the 2006 tornado could be swept into the river. That could cause big problems for the bridges in town.Nicollet County Emergency Management director Denise Wright says, "Especially the Highway 99 bridge, so they'll monitor that. They'll look at it if it's getting to a point they'll close that probably even before there's any water up above it, just because the potential of those trees and stumps that could take that out."Both the city and county are hoping the snow will continue to melt at a gradual pace and all problems will be avoided. However they feeling that by holding meetings and getting the word out, they are staying ahead of the flow instead of just going with it.In Saint Peter, Erick Lind, News 12.
